Obituary for Mildred Janet Sumner

Mildred Janet Sumner was born on December 6, 1930 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to the late Robert Tobe and Mabel Koon Tobe. She was fondly known as “Millie” and “Little Nanny” to her family and friends.

Mildred was raised in Elizabeth and educated in the Elizabeth Public School system where she attended School #10, Alexander Hamilton Junior High School and graduated from Battin High School in1948. Upon graduation from high school, Mildred was employed by the Janet Shops in Elizabeth for several years. She was also a nationally known top model. Mildred was the first African-American Supervisor at RCA Electronics in Harrison, New Jersey and then transferred to the Accounting Department of RCA Records in Manhattan from which she retired in 1986.

She was a Christian woman and a member of Mount Teman A.M.E. Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey for many years where she served in many auxiliaries; she was the President of the Gospel Spiritual Choir and served as the Church Secretary for more than 20 years.

Mildred was very active and had many interests. She was an excellent athlete and participated in bowling and softball tournaments throughout the country. She loved playing Bingo, Pokeno and going to Atlantic City.

Mildred entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, December 27, 2017.

She was predeceased by her stepsister, Minnie Lee Summers.

She leaves to cherish her memory her three sons: Thomas Reginald “Reggie” Sumner and wife, Dionna of Parlin, New Jersey, Gary L. Sumner, Sr. and wife, Joyce of Navarre, Florida, and Robert T. “Bob” Sumner and wife, Gayle of Roselle, New Jersey; nine grandchildren: Nicole Rollins and husband, Adrian, Reggie Sumner and wife Tramel, Andre Sumner, Stephanie Jackson, Gary Sumner, Brandon Sumner, Dahna Sumner, Robert Sumner, and Jared Sumner; seven great-grandchildren: Adriana, Qiora, Myla, Giavanna, Andre Jr., Santana and Treyson; and a host of dear relatives and friends.

Mildred will be deeply missed by her family and friends and by all who knew her.
