Obituary for William Nathaniel "Billy" Whitfield

William Nathaniel Whitfield, affectionately known as “Billy,” was born on January 18, 1932 to the late William Alexander and Grace Elizabeth Hairston-Whitfield in Roselle, New Jersey. Billy was the eldest of seven children. He departed this life on Thursday, November 1, 2018. His youngest son, Lance Whitfield, sister Annette Dreher and brother Thomas Johnson preceded him in death.

Billy received his formal education from Roselle High School. He later entered the United States Army where he took pride in fighting for his country. While in the Army, he was a prizefighter. Following his discharge from the army, he discovered his affection for the open road. Billy owned and operated trucks and travel around the world. He returned to New Jersey where he met and married his wife, Dorothea, formerly known as Dorothea Riley. He worked at Linden Motor Freight, Cosmo Freight Solutions and Hertz Rental Car as an automobile transporter where he served for 25 years until his retirement.

Billy loved jazz music from various artists. If you didn’t know, on any given day, you could hear music blasting from his apartment while he copied music onto cassettes, tapes and CDs. He enjoyed cooking and adding his special touch to enhance any recipe. He made sure he read the newspaper and watched the news to remain current.

Billy was a baseball, football and boxing fan, claiming the Pittsburgh Steelers as his number one team … as he would say – “The Best team ever, it’s a Steeler Nation,’’ he also liked the New York Giants and he viewed Muhammad Ali as the best boxer ever.

Billy’s character spoke for itself. He was a loving, passionate and devoted father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother-in-law, father-in-law, and friend whose personality always embodied warm heartedness, caring, and compassion for all. And we can’t forget his straightforward ability to still bring plenty of laughter to our hearts. He was adored by his co-workers and known as “Map-Quest” because he knew every road and intersection in the United States.

Billy leaves many to cherish his memory, his former wife, Dorothea Whitfield; two sons: Frederick and Steven; four daughters: Dria Moore Styles, Janice Whitfield, Sharon Metz and Colette Whitfield; two sisters: Gladys Simmons and Florence Madden; two brothers: Kenneth Lee and Richard Whitfield; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gone but not forgotten, his memories will forever live in our hearts.
