Obituary for Susan Catherine Crosby

Susan Catherine Crosby was born on May 28, 1959 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to William Isaac Crosby, Sr. and Evelyn Susan Hankerson Crosby. She was called home to eternal rest on May 1, 2019 in Summit, New Jersey.

Susan was raised in Linden, New Jersey and attended the Linden Public School System where she was an active member of the marching band and excelled as a baton twirler. She was also a volunteer in Junior Achievement where she met her very best friend, Izetta Lloyd. She graduated from high school in 1977 and began her life’s journey. Her initial employment out of high school was with New Jersey Bell in Elizabeth, New Jersey and she spent the next 30 years there. She then went to Prudential Insurance who later split off and became Everest Reinsurance. Susan’s main responsibility was to oversee all monies that booked through the Wing system daily. She made sure that all programming and coding ran without errors. She was “the person” who was responsible for quickly updating the system on a daily basis so that money could be posted. While excelling in her career, Susan went back to school and achieved her bachelor's degree in Business Administra-tion from The University of Phoenix. She eventually retired from the Everest in 2015 from her role as an IT manager. Her job was so complex; it took three people to fulfill her duties.

The Lord was a major part of her life. She was a long-term member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Newark, New Jersey under Reverend Dr. William D. Watley where she answered the call to the ministry. She recently joined Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Rahway, New Jersey under the pastoral guidance of Reverend Dr. Marti Robinson, ESQ and First Lady Chantel Robinson. While she wasn’t able to physically attend church every Sunday, she loved to attend online services weekly. Every day Susan sent motivational and encouraging scriptures via email to all of her friends and family.

Susan was blessed with such an amazing family whom she loved tremendously. She was always a mother figure to her younger siblings. They affectionately referred to her as “Mama Sue”. By the age of 27, both of her parents had passed away and she became the matriarch of the family. One thing she loved the most was seeing them all together for family fun. Susan was at the head of the planning committee for the Crosby Family Reunion in July 2018. She wore a joyous smile the entire day as she always did whenever she was with her family. The last family gathering Susan attended was on this past Easter Sunday. She laughed until she cried, ate good food, and wholeheartedly enjoyed the time spent with her family.
Anyone who knew Susan knew her zest for life. She always reminded everyone to live life to the fullest. Whether it was in the stores or online, Susan loved to shop. She never passed on a Saturday lunch date with her girlfriends; it was her favorite. Susan also cherished the many special moments shared with the love of her life, George Hayes.

In the last four months of Susan’s life, she resided at Spring Meadows Assisted Living in Summit, New Jersey. There she touched so many lives, from the director of the facility to the chef in the kitchen; everyone loved Susan along with her sweet and loving personality. She was an encourager to everyone.
Susan has been reunited with her mother, father and brother, William Isaac Crosby, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three sisters: Wanda Finley, Jacqueline Crosby and Jennifer Felix; three brothers: Donald Crosby (Darcella), Keith Crosby (Michaele) and Kenneth Crosby; two godchildren: James Lloyd and Mercedes Savannah Bailey; seven nieces: Tamyelle Murray-Rozier (Johnny), Mahogany Murray, Nicole Mickens (Antonio), Ranessa Crosby, Evelyn Booker, Jessica Felix and Paige Crosby; six nephews: Julian Norman, Karie Stevenson (Alexis), James Ellerbe (Catherine), Brian Booker, Anthony Booker and William Booker; twenty two great-nieces and nephews along with a great host of extended family and friends.
