Obituary for Delano Eduardo Semper

Delano Eduardo Semper was born to Thomas and Ivy Semper, the fourth of six children, on July 24, 1945 in Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama. He attended La Boca Elementary Schools and Paraiso High School. Delano was employed at the Army and Air Force Exchange Services at Howard Air Force Base as a shop assistant. He also helped his family’s small fruit and vegetable market by selling “platano verde” (green plantains) in the neighborhood. His resounding voice could be heard throughout the neighborhood advertising, “Plantains, green plantains! Get your green plantains!” He married Marla Hogan and they had a son, Delano E. Semper, Jr.

He came to the United States in 1969 and worked as a security guard in the Manhattan Detention Complex in New York. Delano married Sylvia A. Semper in 1977. They had two sons, Jodale Blanding and Melvin S. Semper. He retired from the Manhattan Detention Complex and resided in the Bronx until the time of his passing. Delano was an avid storyteller and always had a funny or interesting outlook on many topics. His distinctive laugh and peculiar line of questioning always made for fun conversation. He was fondly known by friends and neighbors in his Bronx neighborhood as, “Panama”.

Left to honor and remember Delano are his sons, Delano E. Semper, Jr.,Melvin S. Semper and Jodale Blanding; daughters-in-law: Tammy Blanding and Oshunusi Semper; grandchildren: Delano E. Semper III, Melissa Semper, Christopher Semper, Melvin Semper Jr., Shanpriest Johnson, Serenity Semper, Marcella Semper and Jaedee Blanding; three sisters: Julia Thompson, Joyce Vallee and Lenka Blue; nieces: Lissette Dorsey, Lenka Spruill, Jehan Semper and Lauren Blue; nephews: Rossano Semper, Samudio Semper, Larry Blue, Anwar Semper, Andre Semper, Matthew Blue and Angel Blue; and many great-nephews and great-nieces. Delano was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Grace Smith and Milvia Semper, wife, Sylvia and granddaughter, Faith Semper. He will be fondly remembered and missed by all.
