Obituary for Allene Paden

Allene Paden was born on June 27, 1927 in Union County, South Carolina to the late Nelson Durham and Hattie Watson Durham. She was the eldest of six children and grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Her most precious memories included attending yearly revivals at an early age. She attended the public schools in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Upon her sweetheart’s return from serving in the armed forces, she married Voyrd Paden (who was her next-door neighbor) on June 29, 1946. With this union, they were blessed with six daughters: Patricia, Judy, Alice, Esther, Kathy and Lora.

Migrated from the South in the 1940’s, Allene and Voyrd lived in New York for a brief period of time before relocating to New Jersey. They resided in Rahway until 1959 and moved to Linden to raise their family. Allene and Voyrd were fondly remembered by many for helping others to provide a place to stay upon their arrival from “The South.”

During her early years, Allene worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Elizabeth. In her words, helping other people in the hospital was one of the most rewarding careers of her life. She was a homemaker also and believed her most important role was to teach her children about Christ and the power of prayer.

Allene was a long-time member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Rahway; however in 1970, she joined Emmanuel Tabernacle A/G in Linden. She actively served in the Women’s Ministries, studied the word avidly through the American Bible Society, and found her calling as a Street Evangelical Missionary. She walked for miles preaching throughout the cities of Linden and Rahway. As a sign of her true faith, Allene, against the wishes of her family, traveled to Jerusalem during the most turbulent times in October 1994 for 10 days by herself. When her daughters told her they weren’t going to let her go, and that no one would take her to the airport. She produced her tickets, itinerary, and a receipt revealing she had already contracted a limo. Her faith in God was unshakeable!

Allene was a woman of strong principles and her greatest legacy was to leave her daughters with strong values. The importance of walking upright in character, never underestimating the power of prayer, and to trust God with all their hearts because there is nothing too hard for God.

Allene was predeceased by her sibling, Alexander Durham; daughter, Patricia Ann Paden; granddaughter, Yvonne Charmion Collins; son-in-law, Michael McLeod; best friend, Florence Rahming, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Allene leaves to cherish precious memories, her daughters: Judy Davis (Paul), Alice Paden, Esther Paden McGriff (Winthrop), Kathy Gail Paden and Lora R. McLeod; three sisters: Ida Mae Banks, Fannie Crosby and Daisy Daniel; one brother, Nelson “Jack” Durham; seven grandchildren: Lisa Davis, Lawreene Paden, Paul Davis, Crystal Keets (Lorenzo), Wendy Paden-McGriff, Nicole Bradley (Siyan) and Gary Little; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Mary Nell Crome and Cora Paden; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
