Obituary for Mamie Mae Tarver

Mamie Mae Tarver was born on April 18, 1907 in Abbeville, Alabama to the late Franklin and Nancy Murphy. Her family moved to Newark, New Jersey when she was eight years old. Growing up, she attended Bethel Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. After moving to Cranford, New Jersey, she became a member of St. Mark’s AME Church. She met and married the late Peter Tarver on May 30, 1922 and have been a resident of Cranford, New Jersey for 95 years.

Mamie was a domestic worker and a caterer whose hors d’oeuvres were much in demand. Her picture was featured in Ladies’ Home Companion magazine in the January 1955 issue showing her making hors d’oeuvres. Once Mamie retired, she loved making quilts and pillows for family and friends. She lived on her own up until her 100th birthday and moved in to Cranford Health and Extended Care in Cranford, New Jersey.

On April 18, 2017, she celebrated her 110th birthday with family and friends and was featured in the Star Ledger on August 19, 2017. She called herself a ‘prayer mother’ and she truly was. She prayed all the time for anyone. One of her favorite prayers, which comes from her heart, was “Praise, praise, praise though your eyes may grow dim. Praise, praise, praise for God is ever on the line…” She recited this all the time. She was a true woman of God.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Peter Tarver Sr.; children: Peter Tarver Jr., James Tarver Sr., Geraldine Frederickson, James (Elsie) Tarver, Margaret McCray, George Tarver Sr., Nancy Morse, and Eric Tarver; daughters-in-law: Grace Tarver and Bertha Lane; grandchildren: Robert McCray, Jr., James Tarver, Jr. and Jeffrey Tarver; great-grandchild, Porsha Tarver; and siblings: Atlas Murphy, Leona Butts, Moselle Drake and Lodelle Hawks.

She is survived by her son, Harold (the late Grace) Tarver; loving daughters-in-law, Brenda (the late Eric) Tarver, and Meredith O’Neil (the late George Tarver, Sr.); loving sons-in-law, Norman (the late Nancy) Morse and Howard (the late Geraldine) Frederickson; 22 grandchildren: Gerald (Lisa) McCray, Arlene McCray (Lewis Lindo), Darlene (John) Parker, Harold Dwayne Tarver, Debra (Shigeto) Itabashi, Gerald Tarver, Sondra Frederickson, Wayne (Cheryl) Frederickson, Derek (Bernice) Frederickson, Stacy (Herbert) Ali, George Tarver, Jr., Mark Tarver, Tina Hardison, Tammy Lane, Desiree (Norman) Johnson, Antione Tarver, Hollee (Harry) Smith, Eric John (LaTanya) Tarver, Todd (Michele) Tarver, Michelle (Hastings) Huggins, Doreen Martinez (Carlton) Hicks, and Tiffany Basma; granddaughter-in-law, Beverly McCray; 32 great-grandchildren: Christopher (Jada) McCray, Kevin McCray, Monique (Ignacio) Vasquez, Marlena McCray, Rhett Parker, Gabriella Parker, Waynard B. (Cara) Frederickson, Whitney Frederickson, Paige D. Frederickson, Sidnee R. Frederickson, Devin D. Frederickson, Wesley Johnson, Jade Bristout-Ali, Nina Ali, Andre Tarver, Cerissa Collier, Lamont Tyler, Jalil Lane, Antione Tarver, Jr., Ahmir Tarver, Austin Smith, Kendall Smith, Brooke Smith, Logan Tarver, Todd Tarver, Jr., Morgan Tarver, Brandon Tarver, Devyn Tarver, Jasmine Martinez, Brittney Martinez, Carl Hicks, and Amir Basma; and a host of loving great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
