Obituary for Shakeem Ismael Bernard

Shakeem Ismael Bernard was born on December 19, 1989 in New York, New York, son of Adolfo Bernard and Chasheena Boone. He departed this life on Friday, November 17, 2017. “Breeze,” as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, moved to Edison, New Jersey at the age of eight. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Linden where he was a member of the Youth Choir and Youth Ministry. He received his education from both the Middlesex and Essex County Public School systems.

Shakeem was a practical joker, and loved pulling pranks and making people laugh. He was a creative soul and an avid artist. At an early age, it was evident he loved various forms of art (music, dance, and drawing). As he aged, his favorite form of expression was through the art of tattoos. He appreciated tattoos for their visual expression, their beauty and emotional power. He lived an artist’s life. For him, normal meant lack of imagination and lack of creativity. He did not wait for inspiration - he was the inspiration. He believed in himself, even when it felt like the world did not. He had some issues with authority, because he embodied innovation.

He met the love of his life, Yasmine Chambers in 2012 and from that union, his only child Ny’Yori was born on September 26, 2016. He spent countless hours with her each and every day. The two had a wonderful bond. The nicknames he called her were “Yo-Yo” and “Golden child.” When you look at her, you see him.

Shakeem was popular, loved and respected by all who knew him.

Shakeem is survived by his mother, Chasheena Boone; father, Adolfo Bernard; step-mother, Cynthia Dawkins; fiancée, Yasmine Chambers; daughter, Ny’Yori Bre’Zay Bernard; step-son, Yasir Chambers; three sisters: Julissa Swann, Shania Coipel and Jazmine Coipel; twin brothers: Jamall Coipel and Jamell Coipel; grandparents: Enett Bernard and Beres Bernard; two aunts: Satora Boone and Giselle-Bernard Phillips; three uncles: Jerone Boone, Julius Boone and Elroy Bernard; niece, Morgan Halley; nephew, Blake Halley; goddaughters: Kayla Robinson and Alexis Robinson; close friend, Danielle Atkinson; and a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
