Obituary for Barbara Ann Mitchell

Barbara Ann Mitchell affectionately known as "Aunt Bobbie" to many family members, was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was educated in the Elizabeth Public School system and attended the all-girls Battin High School. She later moved to Roselle, New Jersey. Barbara passed from death to everlasting life on Monday, October 23, 2017.

She was a graduate of Drake Business School in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where she completed a program in Business Administration. She was last employed at Winters Stamp Company as an Administrative Assistant. She had previously worked for many years at Jefferson Park Daycare Center as a Dietary Aide, alongside her mother Mary Gillis, and they both shared the daily responsibility of preparing breakfast, lunch, and snacks for over 100 children and teachers. She also previously worked at various Voting Poll locations on Election Day.

Barbara was a loving, self-sacrificing, and thoughtful individual, who temporarily raised a few of her nieces and nephews, including Najla and Janette. She was outspoken and had a special way of saying things in a blunt yet caring manner. She had a great sense of humor and laughed so much at times that her head would tilt backwards as tears fell down her cheeks. Playing bingo was a favorite pastime as she was a very lucky individual. Barbara enjoyed good music, especially the Motown Sound, and she was a great dancer. She enjoyed cooking all types of foods and made big meals every holiday, with many of her dishes becoming family favorites. Barbara's baked macaroni and cheese was the best most people had ever tasted, along with other specialties. She also enjoyed shopping and a good sale, and was a smart shopper who could stretch a dollar on a tight budget.

She had vast knowledge and wisdom about different things and read the daily newspaper from the beginning to the end. She was proud of having grown up in the Elizabethport area. She knew many people in the surrounding Elizabeth area and could hold a conversation with anyone from young to old.

Barbara embraced her new life at Elmora Hills Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center as many residents and staff members quickly became her extended family and friends, although the first few months were very challenging as she adapted to being a permanent wheelchair bound resident. As an independent strong-willed woman, it was difficult for Barbara to give up so much independence when she initially became a resident but she slowly took back control of some aspects of her life and found a happy balance. She became President of the Resident Association due to her courageousness and outspokenness. Employees would inform Barbara about various facility issues that needed to be addressed and she gladly accepted the mission to get the issues resolved with Management. She enjoyed attending services at Second Macedonia Baptist Church where she was a Worship Leader and served on the Missionary and Praise Dance ministries. She enjoyed her loving and supportive church family and friends.

Barbara leaves to cherish her fond memories, her two sons: Andre (Felicia) and Marcus; two sisters: Darlene (John) and Elaine; two brothers: Stanley (Gina) and Billy (Shawn); three grandchildren: Mikayla, Taryn, and Ayden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
