Obituary for Theophilus DuBois

Theophilus DuBois was born on February 18, 1926 in Bishopville, South Carolina, son of Bessie Burris DuBois and David DuBois. As a young child, he relocated with his family to Newark, New Jersey. Educated in the Newark Public School System, he graduated from Barringer High School.

He was joined in holy matrimony to Vivian Price and this union was blessed with two children, Gregory and Stacey.

“Nobby”, as he was affectionately known, was a Barber by trade. He owned and operated Nobby’s Barber Shop as well as a Beauty Palor named “Stagorys” and a beauty supply store in Newark for many years. Nobby’s Barber Shop was where major entertainers, like Herbie Hancock, James Moody and Johnny Coles went to get their hair cut when they were in town to perform. He would also cut the hair of all of the males in his family. He was not only an awesome barber, but a father figure to many young men in the community.

He loved jazz music and enjoyed going to clubs and concerts to hear it. He shared his love for music with his nephew, the late George G. Woody, III aka “Tweet” and took him along whenever he could. He taught his granddaughter, Ashanti how to play the piano and he had learned to play the guitar with his brother, “DC”. He also loved dancing and could always be seen burning up the dance floor with the pretty ladies.

“Nobby” loved his family and would preach to them about the dangers of eating pork which he gave up in the 1960’s. He was the only one of his siblings to stop eating pork and he outlived them all.

In his later years, “Nobby” developed glaucoma and lost his vision. He didn’t let this keep him from hanging out with his friends at the local Dunkin Donuts and living independently.

He was well known throughout the City of Newark and was recently honored at a Baxter Terrace Reunion two years in a row. He inspired so many people and will truly be missed.

Theophilus “Nobby” DuBois departed this life on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his parents, Bessie and David DuBois, two sons, Gregory DuBois and Wayne, his wife, Vivian DuBois and his siblings, David C. “DC” DuBois, Betty Irons, Magnolia Woody and Edith Mayo.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, two daughters, Stacey DuBois McAdams and Phyllis; a son, Wayne; grandchildren, Ashanti Vivian DuBois McAdams, Wayne, Jr. “Little Wayne”, Andre, Kelly and Kimberly; a great grandson who he adored, Eahjay Theo-Zair McAdams also known as “His Great Guy”; a brother-in-law, George G. Woody, Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
