Obituary for Richard Delano Foster

Richard Delano Foster, affectionately known as “Richie” “Rock” and “Meat Foster,” was born on August 11, 1945 in Linden, New Jersey to the late Mr. Woodrow Collis Foster, Sr. and Mrs. Mattie Mae Givens Foster. He was the youngest of four children. Richard attended Linden Public School system and graduated from Linden High School in 1963. At an early age, he was baptized at the Linden Revival Center, formerly located at the corners of St. Georges and Chandler Avenues. He became a member of First Baptist Church in Linden under the late pastor, Dr. Samuel Eugene Schell, where he sang with the Emergency Choir.

Richard was employed for many years by the American Cyanamid Company, Linden, NJ, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Woodbridge, NJ and retired from the Union County Paratransit System, Elizabeth, NJ. He enjoyed listening to the “oldies but goodies” and singing Gospel music. Cooking his signature meals, eating crabs and having a “cold one” were some of his favorite pastimes. His favorite Gospel show was Bobby Jones Gospel. He never missed listening to Felix Hernandez on Saturday mornings as he and his two running buddies, the late Clarence Rushing (aka “Clay the Ripper”) and Bernard Dodgers (aka “the Driver”) headed out for breakfast and to do their laundry – a weekly ritual.

On Friday, December 14, 2018, Richard Foster went home to be with the Lord at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (aka Rahway Hospital) in Rahway NJ, following a short-term illness.
