Obituary for Missionary Doris McCall

Missionary Doris McCall was born on October 3, 1949 in Screven County, Georgia in the city of Sylvania to Thomas McCall and Mildred Jackson-McCall. She was a very studious person and was excited about learning new things. Doris received her elementary and high school education in the Sylvania, Georgia School system. After graduating from high school, Doris McCall relocated to the state of New Jersey where she furthered her education by attending Rutgers University for two years and studied Social Science. Doris enjoyed assisting those in her community, social circles and family who may have simply found themselves in a place of hardship or distress. That desire to help and be of assistance to others, she obtained employment with the Woodbridge Developmental Center until the time of retirement. After retiring, she wanted to be useful and entered back into the workforce on a part-time basis at the Woodbridge Board of Education.

Doris McCall loved God and desired a closer relationship with Him. And at the age of ten, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at New Light Baptist Church in Sylvania, Georgia. Although she was focused on obtaining academic success when she arrived in New Jersey, Doris most assuredly did not forget about God and joined the New Zion Baptist Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Doris knew at an early age that she was gifted by God to minister to the needs of others regardless of their race, economic or cultural background. Her pastor recognized that spiritual gifting and she became a Missionary. Being focused on Christ, Doris McCall joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist in Roselle to continue her Christian experience and remained a faithful member until her transition to the other side of eternity.

Doris walked on this side of eternity with a vibrant and lively personality. She did her best to enjoy and live life to the fullest even in spite of her illness that she didn’t allow it to get her down. She was a “classy lady” as her only daughter Tonya characterized her and carried herself as such. It was evidenced by how she kept her home meticulously and also dressed her children as well as herself in the finest attire. This didn’t make her snobbish or conceited, but it showed her heart to always do her best as well as looking it which she learned as a child. Doris enjoyed spending quality time with her daughter Tonya, grandchildren Sevin and Quajon and Aunt/Sister Ruby Jackson who she loved going shopping with.

Doris was received into the arms of a loving God who brought her out of harm’s way to her eternal reward on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 after a long illness at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Doris was predeceased by her parents: Thomas and Mildred McCall; son Bartholomew McCall and a special uncle who was more like a big brother, Levi Jackson.

Missionary Doris McCall leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Tonya McCall-Daughtry of Irvington, NJ; four sisters: Marrianna McCall, Carolyn Riley of Sayreville, NJ, Wendy McCall all of NJ and Yvonne Harmon (Richard) of Ontario, CA; two brothers: Robert McCall (Nisha L.) and Andre McCall; two grandchildren: Quajon Austin and Sevin Barber; one great-grandchild, Abigail Austin; three special aunts who were more like sisters: Ruby Jackson and Edna Brown (Ezra) of Roselle, NJ and Virginia Kindred (John) of Rocky Mount, NC; three aunts who loved her like a daughter: Grace Williams of GA, Bernice Jackson of Rocky Mount, NC and Betty Johnson (Eugene) of Mount Pleasant, SC; one special uncle, Lee Jackson (Emma) of Alcolu, SC; Troy Hudson who she called a special son; best friend/sister of over 40 years, Gertie Singley of NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
