Obituary for Margie Ray Brown

Margie Ray Brown was born on February 8, 1938 in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina to Joe and Jesse Mae Woodard. She was educated in the Rock Hill Public School system.

Margie married Richard Brown in 1953 and from that union they were blessed with a loving daughter, Jonell E. (Brown) Harris. The couple shortly relocated to Roselle, New Jersey where they lived with her husband’s late Uncle Ike and Aunt Ella Means of Rivington Street.

Margie always had strong faith in the Lord. Immediately upon moving to New Jersey, she joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over 60 years until she became ill.

Margie was employed at Eastside Lighting and Hamilton Laundry in Rahway, New Jersey as a Secretary for many years.

Margie was a very strong willed and independent woman who had a mind of her own. She was a true fighter who even survived cancer not once but twice. Those who knew her knew to beware of her flavorful language, witty comments and how she did not bite her tongue. There is no doubt that if you came in contact with her, she pulled no punches on letting you know how she felt about you or any given situation. Many don’t know that Margie was on the basketball team in high school. She also loved to watch golf and tennis. Her all-time favorites were playing cards with her family, bingo and the slot machines definitely which gave her pleasure because she always seemed to win. She and her husband Richard loved to travel to Atlantic City and Las Vegas where the two favorites amongst many other places. Margie loved to sit home and listen to music all day especially on WBLS. She was an avid reader of novels and believed in reading was very important for survival. One of her favorite stories she would tell people over and over again was how she encouraged her grandson Richard on the importance of reading; and how she would have him reading on the potty for hours at the age of two. The last few years of Margie’s life were spent sitting in a chair watching and enjoying the children in her life run around playing as if they were on her tv screen.

On Thursday, August 23, 2019, Margie departed this earthly life at home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Brown; father, Joe Woodard; mother, Jessie Mae Wylie-Woodard; daughter, Angel Brown; two sisters: Corliss Russell and Joan Woodard-Caldwell; two brothers: Willie Frank Woodard and Joseph “JW” Woodard, Jr.; and one special sister-in-law, Janice Woodard.
