Obituary for Junius Lazarus Jackson, Jr.

Junius Lazarus “Jay” Jackson, Jr. was born on December 15, 1926 in Plainfield, New Jersey to the late Lazarus Jackson and Rebecca Gilliam. Junius was one of nine children and the second oldest child. Known in his youth as “Racehorse,” Junius attended public schools in Plainfield before joining the United States Army Air Corp during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947. Returning to civilian life, Junius received training in Hospital Aide for the Care of Neuropsychiatric Patients during his employment at Lyons Veteran Hospital before being employed at Phelps Dodge where he also was an active Union member.

Partying at Shady Rest Country Club in Scotch Plains, Jay met his future wife, Virginia Rose Culbreath of Cranford, New Jersey. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on November 25, 1950 during a tropical storm at St. Marks A.M.E. Church in Cranford, New Jersey. They were blessed with four children, Pamela, Kevin, Sherry and Steven.

During his time as a New York Life Insurance Agent, Jay was an active community volunteer. He served as a Delegate for New Jersey at the White House Conference on Libraries. Jay was a participating member of the Westfield Optimist Club and volunteered with the EOF program of Union County College to assist with the educational development of students before becoming one of the original Board members of the Cranford Senior Housing Board.

On Monday, January 7, 2019, surrounded by family members and a caring Home Health Aide Taiwu, Junius Lazarus Jackson, Jr. passed away at home in Cranford, New Jersey at the age of 92.

He was predeceased by his son, Kevin; and brothers, Jessie Booker, Franklin Delano Jackson and Paul Jackson.

Junius leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Virginia “Ginny” Jackson; children: Pamela Simmons, Sherry Williams, Steven (Judy), and George; brothers: Lawrence (Edith), James (Jean), John and Henry; grandchildren: Yvette, Ericka, Tyrone (Antoinette), Cristina (Therion), Austin and Kara; great–grandchildren: Krystal, Quionna, Michael, L. J., Bryan, Haelie, Becca and Mathias; great-great-grandchildren: Demetre, Amber, Demin and Kaiden; and a host of nieces, nephews, dear relatives and friends.
