Obituary for Joe Louis Paden

Joe Louis Paden was born on September 8, 1938 in York County, South Carolina to the late Elliott Paden and Hollie Starnes Paden. He was the youngest of seven children and was raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina. At an early age, he joined Center Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Tirzah, South Carolina.

Joe graduated from Emmett Scott High School where he was the Historian of his class. After high school, he served in the United States Air force for four years as a Communications Technician and was honorably discharged on July 9, 1962.
After serving in the Air Force, Joe moved to New Jersey where he met his wife, Cora L. Roberts. They were joined in holy matrimony on March 6, 1963. With this union, they were blessed with three daughters, Verdell, Avis and Alayna, and one grandson, Nelson.

Joe joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Kenilworth, New Jersey in 1963. He served on the Usher and Trustee Boards, and sang in the Male Chorus. He was the President of the Building Fund, Church School Treasurer, a member of The Bower-Roberts Scholarship Fund, and Chairperson Pro Tem of the Steward Board. On December 23, 2018, Joe was honored as one of the “Fathers of the Church.”

Joe graduated from Radio Electronics Technician School, Programming Systems Institution, and Dale Carnegie School. He worked for Allen Industries and Warner Lambert, before retiring from Supermarkets General (Pathmark) and IBM. After retiring, Joe worked part-time for On-Time Transport in Roselle, New Jersey.

Joe was involved in many activities such as mentoring young people, the Roselle Fishing Club, The NAACP Roselle Branch, and the AARP Roselle Chapter 5293. He was also a member of the Widow’s Son Lodge #9 AF & AM where he served as the Master & Worthy Patron of Queen Esther Chapter #4, Roselle, New Jersey. Joe played softball and was a Pitcher for the Pathmark Softball team. He loved all types of music especially Jazz, Oldies but Goodies, Rhythm and Blues, and Gospel. His favorite artists were Lola Falana and Mahalia Jackson. Joe’s hobbies were fishing, gardening, painting pictures, bowling, and especially watching TV shows Westerns and Sanford & Son.

Joe Louis Paden was a quiet and humble man with a sense of humor and took his flight to be with the Lord on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 11:45 A.M. at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey after a brief stay at the New Jersey State Veterans Memorial Home in Paramus, New Jersey.

He was predeceased by his siblings: Lomile B. Paden, Johnnie H. Paden, Grier L. Paden, Voyrd E. Paden, and Beatrice Paden.

Joe leaves to cherish precious memories, his beloved and devoted wife, Cora L. Paden; three daughters: Verdell J. Paden, Avis D. Paden and Alayna Y. Paden; one grandson, Nelson D. J. Paden; one sister, Mary I. Paden Crome of Rock Hill, SC; one sister-in-law, Allene Durham Paden of Linden, NJ; one Goddaughter, Lora R. McLeod; Godsons: Rodney “Ted” Allen and DeRon Scott; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Joe Loved his family and friends, his church and especially God.
