Obituary for Evangelist Lorraine Carter-Bowers

Evangelist Lorraine Carter-Bowers was born on February 1, 1938 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the oldest daughter of the late Edmond L. Carter, Sr. and Mattie Pearl Raymond Carter. She was educated in the Linden Public School system and graduated from Linden High in 1956.

She married Joseph Bowers on August 1, 1959 and relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were blessed with a daughter, Londa Pearl Bowers and a son, the late Lamont Louis Bowers.

Lorraine was first employed at Raritan Arsenal in Middlesex County, New Jersey where she excelled very quickly as a Stenographer and Secretary. Many years later, she completed a stunning work career at the Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) as a Secretary, retiring after thirty years of service. Additionally, she accomplished a twenty-four year career with W. B. Saunders Company where she retired as a Print Typesetter. Her persistent hard work and dedication allowed her to acquire the homes and dream cars of her desires, of which she was very proud.

Lorraine was exceptionally talented. She was an impeccable seamstress and very skilled baker. Born with a natural green thumb, she had a special love and gift for growing a variety of plants, roses and gardenias. During her leisure times, she enjoyed going to the Atlantic City beach to relax and tan, or simply sit and bask in a sun-filled area with her favorite snacks, water and sodas. “Raine,” “Rainey,” “Sis-Lorraine” or “Aunt Raine,” as she was affectionately known, delighted in listening to all genres of music and recording her favorites on tape cassettes for soothing replay. The golden oldies held a special place in her heart, especially during her senior years.

On Mother’s Day weekend of 1979, Lorraine experienced a supernatural healing miracle from God, and her life was never again the same. There was fire in her belly and a running in her feet to tell EVERYONE that “Jesus is Real,” “Praise the Lord,” “Holy Spirit will make you repent and forgive often,” and “open your mouth and ask God/Jesus to flood you with his Holy Spirit.” She served as a faithful member of Pentecostal Faith Assembly Church for over twenty years, and evangelized in every way she could. From passing out spiritual tracts as she sold small potted plants to participating in Salvation Army Prison Ministries, she was determined to spread the good news gospel of Jesus Christ!

Lorraine’s witty and unique, yet quietly reflective personality is already GREATLY missed. She lived lively, and LOVED God with ALL of her heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30); therefore, peaceful rest and divine rewards are now her portion!

She was predeceased by her brothers: James Carter, Harold Carter, and Edmond Carter, Jr. and one sister, Patricia Bowens.

Always hearing her internal voice with eternal memories will be her daughter, Londa Pearl Bowers; step-mother, Emma Carter; three brothers: Tony Parker, John Carter, and Fred Carter; three sisters: Geraldine Carter, Catherine Carter, and Gloria Carter-Hopkins (Ricky); aunt, Eleanor Carter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, god-children and friends.
