Obituary for Deaconess Mattie Katherine Harvey-Jones

Deaconess Mattie K. Harvey-Jones, was born on June 28, 1929 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the late Thomas Harvey, Sr. and Thelma Byrom Harvey. She was graciously escorted into the Presence of her personal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, August 19, 2018.

Mattie was the one of eleven children. From a young child, Mattie's life was dedicated to serve God and to keep her family together in Peace. She graduated from Abraham Clark High School in Roselle, New Jersey in 1948. Mattie worked part time for Nesbitt Funeral Home in Elizabeth for years. She worked at Tappin's in Elizabeth where she experienced the "Blue Vein" society. Mattie was allowed to go through front entrances or take elevators, because "others" were able to see her veins through the skin on her hands; therefore, she was given a "pass." Mattie's career was in private nursing. Another part of her life that showed compassion for helping others.

“Deaconess Mattie K.,” as she was affectionately known, began her Christian walk at home and continued at First Baptist Church in Linden (a church her father, Deacon Tom Harvey helped to establish). Mattie was a strong advocate and believer in Christians (young and old) being thoroughly educated in the various functions, roles and responsibilities of the Church body at large, as well as, teaching people to have a strong foundation based on The Word of God, leading to having a personal walk/relationship with Jesus Christ. Deaconess Mattie K. was on the executive boards of many, many auxiliaries in the Middlesex Central Baptist Association, Baptist Ushers Union of Newark and Vicinity, National Baptist Convention Inc of USA and Baptist Deacons Association, local churches, NAACP and African American community committees. Deaconess Jones touched the lives of thousands of youth, as a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Mentor, and Advisor for the Youth Department, Jr. Choir, Jr. Ushers, Jr. Missionaries, Jr. Deacons, Deaconesses and Trustees, Jr. Nurses Aids, BTU (Baptist Training Union) and Charm School instructor. Mattie K. served as Chairwoman or President of most of the following Ministries at First Baptist Church: Deaconess, Ushers, Missionaries, Pastor’s Aid, and Nurses Aid. Additionally, Deaconess Mattie K. Jones was instrumental in formalizing the Senior Choir and Emergency Choir.

Mattie resided in Edison, New Jersey in the loving care of her beloved and devoted daughter, Darleen and her committed and faithful son-in-love, Charles Pittman.

Deaconess Mattie Katherine Harvey Jones was predeceased by her beautiful daughter and first born child, Thelma Maria Jones Leach; three grandchildren: Sean Arthur Jones, Tyeron Martin and Avery Leach; and six siblings: Elizabeth Cannon, Ruby Mae McKenzie, Marie Williams, Charlene McLendon and Thomas “Sonny” and Heyward Harvey.

Deaconess Mattie K. Harvey-Jones leaves to continue her legacy of loving and serving God and others, her children: Arthur Lee Jones, Jr., Mark W. Jones, Darleen R. Pittman (Charles) and Duane J. Cannon (Shannon); four siblings: Ruth Fox, Robert and Joseph Harvey, and Valerie Nadir (Habeeb-Ullah); 15 grandchildren: Darnéa LaPierre (Lawrence), Amber Jones, Tanyell Ratliff (Maurice), Shea-Lin, Tarik, Cara-Linh and Audra Jones, Tamiraque Martin, Khadria Wooten, Tahanee Aviles (Angelo), Tamir and Temia Jones, Erik Ayala, Janae and Kendyle Cannon; 11 great-grandchildren: TéSean, David, Hasson, Asiya, Madison, Lawren, Rylie, Asiana, Anigh, Taleyah and Jaden; and a host of dear relatives and friends.

The cry in Mattie’s heart is for her entire family to be saved; enabling them to see her again, in a place called Heaven.
