Obituary for Charles Junior Moore

Charles Junior Moore was born on July 30, 1932 in Vero Beach, Florida, son of the late Esther McGee and Charles Moore. Along with his grandparents, he relocated to New Brunswick, New Jersey where he received his early education. While living with his grandparents, they became co-founders of the existing Tabernacle Baptist Church on George Street.

As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War. He achieved the rank of Private and received an honorable discharge.

Charles, also known to some as “Chuck,” met Lois Elaine Williams at a social dance in Roselle, New Jersey. They dated and eventually married. With this union four children were born — James, Gregory, Richard and Nancy Darlene.

Charles was a hard worker and took on several jobs, but he managed to attend his sons’ high school baseball, football and basketball games. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and extended family members for special events.

One of his jobs included working in a restaurant baking pies and he transferred those skills to the family kitchen. While in the kitchen making some of the best fried chicken, the family said, “they would watch him show off some of his smooth dance moves over flour on the floor or was it sugar?” He also made some of the best black-eyed peas, pinto beans and collard greens!

Charles was employed as a machine operator at Schering-Plough in Kenilworth, New Jersey for 10 years and retired in 1996. Previously, he worked as a machine operator for Gehring Plastics later known as Monsanto for 25 years.

He was a passionate fan of his favorite baseball team, the New York Yankees and football team the New York Giants. He had other favorite past times that included fishing on the jetties in Staten Island—not sure if he caught more sea robins than any other fish! His favorite television shows were westerns and military movies. He also loved listening to jazz music and did a pretty good job of imitating Nat King Cole.

On Sunday, May 26, 2019, Charles Junior Moore departed this life at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth at the age of eighty-six.

Charles was predeceased by his first wife, Lois Moore; second wife, Rosa Moore; and eldest granddaughter, Shanique Washington–Orr.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, his sons: Rev. James Moore, Sr. (Min. Margaret), Lance McNeil, Gregory Moore, Sr. (Rita), and Richard Moore, Sr. (Janet); daughter, Nancy Darlene Crawford; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
