Obituary for Arthur Lee Jones, Sr.

Arthur Lee Jones, Sr. was born on October 22, 1925 in Roselle, New Jersey to the late James Jones and Ella Mae Searcy Jones. Arthur was the youngest of three children. Arthur received his early education in Roselle and Westfield. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of 18. During his time in the Navy, Arthur became a Minesweeper (YMS-408) on the Japanese Islands, Kyeshu and Honshu. Arthur was the only Black aboard the naval vessel, where he was appointed as a cook. He was responsible for menu planning, cooking and baking. Upon being discharged from the U.S. Navy, Arthur moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shortly after, he enrolled in the United States Army. Arthur trained for and passed the Army test for Machinist. At the time, however, the position was not open to Black soldiers. Arthur was assigned to the 159th Field Artillery Battalion where he became a Field Radio Operator. During this time, he learned International Morse Code. After his honorable discharge in May of 1949, Arthur returned to Philadelphia. Soon after, he returned to New Jersey.

It was in Roselle that Arthur met his first love and soul mate, Mattie Katherine Harvey. On October 22, 1950, Arthur and Mattie were married at First Baptist Church of Linden, New Jersey. They moved to Kenilworth to start their family. In 1971, Arthur and Mattie purchased a home for their family in Edison.

Arthur loved the Lord. He enjoyed singing God’s praises. In 1956, Arthur was baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church. Soon after, he joined Trinity Temple SDA Church, where he served as an Elder. Arthur enjoyed church functions, white water rafting, jogging, marathons, dancing and traveling to the Caribbean. Arthur was a passionate family historian. He took his granddaughter, Darnéa, all over Georgia, Florida and Tennessee to meet family members, found Census information, and gathered historical data. He published some of his findings by creating a booklet and post information on genealogy websites. Arthur was employed by the United State Post Office, from which he retired. Upon retiring in the early 1990’s, Arthur relocated to Albany, Georgia where he became an active member at Emmanuel SDA Church. At Emmanuel, he was a Deacon and member of The Spiritualairies, National Servicemen Organization, Men’s Ministry and he was a Religious Liberty Leader. At Emmanuel, Arthur met Ida Johnson, whom he later married.

Arthur obtained his G.E.D. in 2008 at age 83. In 2009, he was honored as “Golden Eagle G.E.D. Student of the Year.” Arthur returned to New Jersey in 2015 to be with his family. His eldest son, Art Jr., and his loving granddaughter, Amber were his devoted caregivers.

Arthur departed this world on August 19, 2018, exactly 10 hours after his first love, Mattie K. Harvey-Jones. His wish is that all of his family be saved and find peace in Christ.

Arthur was predeceased by his wife: Ida Mae Jones; brother: Willie Jones, Sr.; sister: Mary Jones Robinson; daughter, Thelma Jones Leach; and grandsons, Tyeron Martin and Avery Leach.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, his sons: Arthur L. Jones, Jr., Mark W. Jones, Duane J. Cannon (Shannon); daughter, Darleen R.
