Obituary for Rosa Mae Jennings

Rosa Mae Jennings was born on August 3, 1947 in Vance County, North Carolina, daughter of the late Johnnie L. Durham, Sr. and Adlene Durham. She was educated in the Vance County Public School system. Rosa graduated from Henderson Institute and moved to New Jersey in 1965.

Always loved and worshipped her Lord and savior Jesus Christ, she became a proud member of the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church which she considered her home of praise for over fifty years.

She was blessed with her loving son, Marcus L. Durham, Sr. on August 29, 1970 who she loved unconditionally. Rosa married Roland Jennings on June 21, 1980 and they shared their lives together up until her husband’s passing. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Rosa was also a dedicated employee of National Tool and Die in Mountainside, New Jersey for over twenty years.

Rosa was a God-fearing woman who truly loved her family. She was known for always opening her doors for family gatherings, food, and fun! Her specialties were fried chicken and her famous Carolina-style Chili Hot Dogs! She spearheaded most of the infamous family events from holidays, backyard cookouts, and proudly, the elegant annual Mother’s Day celebrations. All would be invited for the warmest hospitality known to man, and were sure to be embraced as “Peaches, Plum, or Darling!” Rosa’s infectious smile, heartwarming spirit, dance moves to “Follow Me” and jubilant laugh will forever live in our memories and hearts.

On Sunday, July 21, 2019, Rosa Mae Jennings departed this earthly life at Trinitas Regional Medical Center.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Jennings; four brothers: John L. Durham, Trustee Charlie W. Durham, Ellis Durham and Walter Lee Durham, Sr.; one sister, Dora Wimbush and grandson, Derrick Durham.

Rosa leaves to cherish with fond memories her son, Marcus Lamont Durham, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Tammy Durham; sisters: Lelia Brown, Alberta Jefferson (John), and Vivian Joseph (Carlos); one brother, Larry Durham, Sr. (Vernetta aka “Nellie”); two grandchildren: Marcus L. Durham, Jr. and Shayla Durham; sisters-in-law: Helen Durham, Lucy Durham, Marion Durham and Deborah Jennings; brother-in-law, Raymond Jennings; godchildren: Kirstin Riddick and Brandon Durham; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, close family members and friends.
