Obituary for William I. Van Kline, Jr.

William I. Van Kline, Jr. was born on February 20, 1949 in Rahway, New Jersey, eldest son of the late William I. Van Kline, Sr. and Roberta Van Kline. He grew up in a household of 12 children, 8 sisters and 3 brothers. He graduated from Linden High School in 1967 where he ran track and got the nickname “Pokey”.

“Little Bill,” or “LaBill,” as he was affectionately called by his family, was the oldest so he had a lot of responsibilities that fell on his shoulders. Daddy always said that Bill had to take care of us because he was our big brother and at a young age he helped support the family. He purchased our mom a washing machine. He was loving, generous and caring. Bill was appreciative of everything people did for him. When he was younger, he was known as a fighter. As an adult, we considered him “The Great Debater” because he liked to challenge people mentally. He also wanted things done his way and if you did not do it he would instruct you on how to. He would tell you what was going on outside the room even though he had not left his room. He was funny and would always start trouble with his sisters and brothers. Whenever you saw his silly sideway grin, you knew he was going to say something funny or sarcastic. He enjoyed walking, drawing and playing Solitaire on the computer. He loved listening to music, his favorite song was “25 Miles” by Edwin Starr and you could hear him singing, “I gotta walk on ah ah ah.” Bill remained positive despite his physical challenges, took them in stride and was never bitter. This was a testament to his bravery, faith, strength and love of others.

On Thursday, August 24, 2017, William I. Van Kline, Jr. departed this life.

William is predeceased by his brother, Donald Van Kline and two sisters: Donna Van Kline-Murray and Barbara Van Kline Shivers.

He leaves cherish fond memories, his siblings: Jacqueline Chapman, Tanya Gaskin, Bobby Van Kline, Janet Van Kline, Zakiyyah Sandra Muhammad and husband Abdullah Lesure, Mark Ibrahim Van Kline and wife Jackie, Juanita Dickens and husband Kenny, and Lolita Williamson and husband Darin; and a host of nieces, nephews, dear family members and friends.
