Obituary for Samuel Knight, Jr.

Samuel Knight, Jr. was born on March 3, 1941 in Savannah, Georgia, the only child born to the late Samuel Knight, Sr. and Edmonia Knight Willis. He attended public schools in Savannah where he graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1959.

In November of 1960, he married his high school sweetheart Gwendolyn Hudson. They moved to New Jersey and became the proud parents of four beautiful daughters, Cheryl, Bridgette, Tracy and Tara.

Sam and Gwen owned “S & G Record Store” in Rahway, New Jersey and were the first black business owners in the area. He was employed at National Can/Silgan Containers as a Chemical Operator for 42 years, retiring in 2006.

Music was his “hobby.” During his earlier years, he became a member of a local band where he played the guitar and drums, and sang with the band.

On Tuesday, July 31, 2018, Samuel Knight, Jr. departed this earthly life in Mt. Holly, New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bridgette.

Samuel Knight, Jr.’s memory will be greatly cherished by his daughters, Cheryl Fish (Donea), Tracy Knight (Arroyo) and Tara Knight; grandchildren: Tierney, Damano, Ashley, Bria, Arroyo and Brandon; great-grandchildren: Tyrelle, Byron, Ethan, Nyla, Jordan, Bryce and Mariyaa; sister-in-law, Earlyn Simmons (Thomas); nieces: Joi Green and Attorney Tiffany Simmons; nephew, Fred Hudson; cousins: Wanda Soto, Dr. Tonya Brown-Price, Bill Brown, Rolanda Cruz (Rolando), Rianna Soto and Landrum Price; and God sister, Donna Johnson.
