Obituary for Ruth Ann Jenkins

Ruth Ann Jenkins affectionately known as “Janie” and “Nana,” was born June 5, 1943 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Her parents, John Bennett and Luler Bennett, preceded her in death.  During her early years, Ruth moved from North Carolina to New Jersey where she fell in love and married the late Mason Jenkins, Sr. From this union, two extremely devoted sons Tracy Jenkins, Sr. and Rodney Jenkins Sr. were born. Ruth departed this life on September 8, 2017.

Ruth received her formal education from the Charlotte Public School system. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School and later attended Union County College in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Ruth maintained full-time employment during her entire adult life. Over a span of six decades she was employed by various companies, most notably the Singer Sewing Machine Company and Activas, where she was employed as an office professional at the time of her passing. In addition to Ruth’s continuous employment, she also established herself as an entrepreneur, serving the community in which she lived. For many years, she was self-employed as the owner of a thrift store providing residents with affordable choices for their family and household needs. Moreover, Ruth extended this service beyond the community for more than 30 years by working each weekend as a vendor at the Englishtown Flea Market.

Ruth loved to travel both domestically and abroad.  She particularly enjoyed trips to the Hawaii, Bahamas, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and North Carolina where she enjoyed family, food, and fun. Ruth was extremely family-oriented; therefore, her absolute favorite past time was spending time with her family and close friends. She often spent hours drinking coffee and conversing with her cousin John Sinclair, Sr. Lovingly, she hosted an “Open House” every weekend, which featured love, laughter, all genres of music and great meals she would prepare for her children and grandchildren.

A self-made entrepreneur and motivated hard worker who was always dressed to impress, Ruth was a Fashion diva who could make clothes for anyone! She inspired many and dressed friends and family from the workforce to weddings to special occasions. She was the go-to person for custom made clothing in the community. Ruth also loved to crochet beautiful and heartfelt articles of clothing for babies and adults alike.
Ruth was the only sister to four brothers. She was preceded by death by her brother, John Bennett, Jr.

Ruth’s treasured memories will be left to her two children: Tracy Jenkins, Sr. (Melissa), and Rodney Jenkins, Sr. (Angela); three brothers: James Bennett, William Bennett and LeRoy Bennett, Sr.; six grandsons: Tracy Jenkins, Jr. (Shatasia), Tyrell Jenkins, Tyrese Jenkins, Rodney Jenkins, Jr., Robert Jenkins, and Raymond Jenkins; two great-grandchildren: Aanesti Peterman and Taizire Jenkins; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Ruth‘s legacy of love for family is a memory we all treasure.
