Obituary for Robert Christian Blackwell

Robert Christian Blackwell, a.k.a. ”Bubbie,” was born on May 23, 1956 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Robert Blackwell, Sr. and Mildred Angel Blakely Blackwell. He was the second born of four children: siblings: Margaret Alma, Clifford Maurice and Ira Jesse.

His early life began in Vauxhall, New Jersey where he was raised, loved, well known and respected. Robert was educated in the Union School system. He later joined the United States Navy where he received an honorable discharge. Following discharge, he did sales work for a short time. He traveled throughout the United States from Washington, DC and Virginia to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bubbie always had a big heart and he truly was a loyal friend to his buddies: Larry, Spence and Butch. As Bubbie dealt with life’s challenges, he kept a positive outlook and always asked about his friends and associates back in Vauxhall. He fought to stay well and often called family members to stay connected.

Bubbie enjoyed listening to Motown music and pretty much knew the words of the lyrics to every song. He loved music from that era. Some of his favorite groups included The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Spinners, The Whispers, Blue Magic, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, and of course, Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five. Let’s face it! He had great taste in music! He actually loved writing his own lyrics and sang his original songs over the course of 40 plus years.
Bubbie also loved getting dressed in either a three-piece suit or a stylish walking suit. He “stayed sharp” at all times, wearing his black Italian leather boots and topping it all off with sunglasses. He was always cool and suave.

Robert will sorely be missed and although he is no longer here on earth, he has reached his heavenly home, resting from labor to reward. We, the family, find comfort in knowing that Robert tried his very best to live up to his middle name “Christian.” He professed the Lord as his personal savior and often quoted the scriptures verbally and in writing. He served under the mentorship of the late Bishop Leroy Holmes and Resurrection Temple Ministries.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his sister, Min. Margaret Alma Moore (Rev. James E. Moore, Sr.); two brothers: Clifford Maurice Blackwell (Marceline) and Ira Jesse Blackwell; aunt, Grace Blackwell; cousin, Priscilla Blackwell Roberts; relative, Betty Blackwell; eight nieces: LaTanyua, Brittany, and Donette Blackwell, Marette Tyree, Marissa Phifer, Tiffany Sandhu, Gardia and Jere Moore; six nephews: David Blackwell, James, Jr. and Timothy Moore, Michael Tyree, Stephen Phifer and Taj Sandhu; and five great-nieces.

Suddenly and sadly, Robert left us two days prior to our beloved godmother, Aunt Beatrice who loved him dearly. Godmother and godson will never be forgotten. God Bless them both!
