Obituary for Richard Bernard Morgan

Richard Bernard Morgan, also affectionately known as “Bernard”, “Pop Pop” and “Bernie," was born on May 18, 1945 in Durham, North Carolina, son of the late Samuel and Mary Morgan. He was raised in a musically talented family in Durham where he attended Bethel Tabernacle United Holy Church. He was educated in the Durham City School system and attended Hillside High School. Bernard and his siblings were very close and had a great relationship with him.

Bernard was employed at Domar Buckle in Newark, New Jersey. In the early 1960s and 1970s, he was a founding member and drummer of his band called, “The Soul Kings.”

On July 10, 1965, Bernard married the beautiful and late Dorothy Patricia Morgan who was the love of his life. They were blessed with three children. He truly loved his children and grandchildren who meant the world to him. Family was very important to Bernard and they were the highlight of his life.

He loved watching television with his grandchildren. “Eyewitness News,” “Wheel of Fortune” and “Sanford and Son” were his favorite shows. Bernard always would say to his children and grandchildren, “Don’t ever say goodbye to me,” say, “See you later.” The kids would say “See ya later Pop Pop,” then my dad would say, “See ya later alligator,” and the kids would say “After while crocodile.” Bernard’s signature look was his sunglasses and hat tilted to the side. You would never see Bernard without his sunglasses. He also enjoyed Gospel and Soul music, eating chocolate and walking in his spare time.

On Thursday, March 29, 2018, Richard Bernard Morgan went home to be the Lord. He was truly a great man, a wonderful friend and loved by all. He will truly be missed.

Bernard was predeceased by his son, Quinton Sutton.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, his four children: Belita Morgan Houser (Kevin), Antoine Morgan (Nikki), April Morgan and Gregory Sutton; one brother, Charles C. Morgan (Badriyyah); four sisters: Clinnie L. Barnhart, Esther R. Jones, Miriam V. Morgan and Iris E. Morgan; 6 grandchildren: Kayla, Antoine, Mahogany, Aaron, Khalil and Jasmine; two sisters-in- law: Peggy Robinson (Stanley) and Johnnie Mae Morgan; brother-in-law, Daniel Prescott, Jr. (Doris); close family friends: Joyce Rogers and Robin Frieson; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
