Obituary for Mother Thelma Foreman

Mother (Bay Gaines) Thelma Foreman was born in Newark, NJ on June 19, 1930, the daughter of the late Roosevelt Gaines, Sr. and Thelma Constance Hampton Gaines. She was reared in Elizabeth, NJ and attended Elizabeth Public Schools and was known as “Bay Gaines” throughout the community and abroad. Her early Christian education began at Liberty Baptist Church under Rev. Tyler T. Thomas. There she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Adult and Emergency choirs.

In 1979 she joined Bibleway Deliverance Center under the leadership of Bishop Wayne L. Johnson, and served untiringly for nearly 40 years. She took a front row seat and became a pillar of wisdom, strength, and beauty in every aspect of Kingdom building. Scores of pastors and ministers would come to Bibleway for worship and expected to see the radiant smile of this sainted mother in Zion. She was a loving, caring and sharing lady distinguished by style, class, and top of the line fashion. While she was both cordial and facilitating, she was also a firm, strict, no nonsense mother who was not afraid to employ disciplinary action and correction when necessary.

Mother Foreman loved to travel and accompanied her Pastor in Deliverance Rallies and Crusades across the country. She rarely missed a service and was always front and center. She was a staunch supporter of the ministry and lead by precept and example. She loved, supported and blessed her children, and was blessed to witness a family of four generations. She was a crowned jewel to her family, church, and the nations.

Mother Foreman graduated with Bachelor and Master Degrees in Religious Education from Evangelical Bible Institute of Newark, NJ. She loved the Word of God and was a great Dean of Instruction teaching Sunday School faithfully every Sunday morning for decades. She worked in every aspect of ministry and was currently serving as President of the Pastor’s Banquet Committee, President of the Deaconess Board, President of Mother’s Board, Superintendant of Sunday School, Supervisor of the Kitchen Committee, member of Missionary Board, Radio Guild, Building Fund Committee, and Church Mother. She formerly served on the Nurses Board and Senior Choir. Because of her longevity, support and dedication to ministry, she has been dubbed “National Mother” and “Queen” of Bibleway Deliverance Center.

Mother Foreman was predeceased by two brothers, Roosevelt (Sonny) Gaines, Jr., and Richard (Dickie) Gaines; four sisters, Beatrice Gaines (Bea), Dorothy (Dot) Colley, Leanora Hall, and Annette Kearney. She leaves to mourn, one daughter, Rita Gaines-Reaves; two sons, Ray Harvey Gaines, Jr. and Kevin Salters; seventeen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a special friend/sister, Marcella Williams; two spiritual daughters, Overseer Vanessa A. Nero and Donna Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. We love you, Momy, Nana and Auntie Bay and God loves you more!
