Obituary for Marvin Burnam

Marvin Burnam, the only son of Viola Lester and Arthur Burnam, was born on January 8, 1952 in Dooley County, Georgia. Marvin, affectionately known as “Merv,” entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 1, 2017 at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, New Jersey.

As a young child, Arthur, Viola and Marvin made their way north and settled in Elizabeth, New Jersey; where Marvin attended Elizabeth Public Schools. In 1970, Marvin received his high school diploma from Elizabeth High School, Elizabeth, New Jersey. Upon completion of high school, Marvin began to study the electrical trade ultimately working his way to master electrician. After finding both a love for his craft and the desire to be an entrepreneur, Marvin launched M-Bee Security LLC – his own electrical repair company – providing exceptional work for family, friends and small business throughout the state of New Jersey, for over 20 years.

Marvin was a calm, cool, smart and witty person. He loved playing and teaching tennis. It was common to find him at a park hitting a few balls or teaching his children and/or grandchildren the basics of the game. Marvin also loved listening to jazz music, playing chess, and playing the African drums. Marvin was a ferocious reader especially of knowledge to uplift himself, his family or the African/black community. Marvin was also a bit of "jokester" and you were sure to laugh at his quick wit and humorous antics on every occasion.

His father, Arthur Burnam, four aunts and six uncles preceded Marvin in death.

He leaves to cherish with loving thoughts and memories, his mother, Viola Lester Burnam of Roselle, New Jersey; wife, Susan Durant of Linden, New Jersey; three sons: Jamaal Burnam (Dennille) of Rahway, New Jersey, Kahlil Burnam (Rena) of Crofton, Maryland and Sehmon Burnam of Linden, New Jersey; three daughters: Fatimah Burnam-Watkins (Jon) of Linden, New Jersey, Charlene Minatee of Maryland and Miesha Burnam of Linden, New Jersey; one brother, Bruce Taylor, seven grandchildren: Jekhi, Bryce, Cole, Corynne, Jace, Empriss and Ivy; one aunt, Annie Pearl of Georgia; and a host of cousins, extended family and friends.
