Obituary for Helen Robinson Brown

Helen Robinson Brown was born on February 2, 1922 in Beauford County on Frogmore Island, South Carolina.  Raised by an extended family, Helen and her brother Nathan spent many happy days doing chores in and outside of their home.  She was a “wiz” in the kitchen and learned how to prepare meals at a young age. Helen’s responsibility to have food prepared for her uncle and brother when they came back home from the field.  Since kitchen duties were known as “women's work,” formal education was not her primary focus.  She spent many days at home with her aunt performing domestics duties for the whole family.

At the age of sixteen, Helen longed to see more of the outside world so she moved to New York City.  After finding a place to live, Helen found several jobs that she could master because of her extensive domestic experience and required limited education. She found occupations that would display her expertise. During that time, Helen’s mother, Eva who also lived in New York, passed away unexpectedly. Helen was left alone in the big city. As faith would have it, she met Benjamin Brown and didn’t know that this man would become her husband. In 1949, Benjamin and Helen became husband and wife and lived in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Soon after, they moved to the Bronx where Helen became a Building Superintendent. They enjoyed their married bliss until Benjamin entered glory on February 12, 1974 after battling walking pneumonia.  After the death of her husband, Helen worked for years as a Domestic Engineer for the Manacow family until her retirement.  Upon her retirement using her good common sense and expertise, she became the neighborhood Babysitter for mothers in the area who could not afford daycare.  What Helen may have missed in the classroom, she learned a lot by herself and just living life.  She was very independent and lived alone for 23 years until she moved to Roselle, New Jersey with her daughter and son-in-law.

She was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church since 2010.
On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Helen Brown departed this life in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

She was predeceased by her brother, Nathan Robinson.

Helen Brown leaves to cherish her memory, her two sons: Benjamin Brown (Talib Abdullah) and wife, Aisha and Nathaniel Brown and wife, Marie; daughter, Deborah Dessaure and husband, Adolph; 8 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a host of family members and friends.
