Obituary for George Kenneth Newsome

George Kenneth Newsome was born on September 13, 1952 in Wilson, North Carolina, the only child born to Margaret Newsome and the late J. D. Best. “Bop”, as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was educated in the Greene County Public Schools system and graduated from high school in 1969.

He was drafted and served in the United States Army before being honorably discharged for medical reasons.

After relocating to New Jersey, George met Christine Owens and in 1977 they were joined in holy matrimony. This union was blessed with one daughter, Nichelle. He would later be blessed with four more children, Patrick, Marnetta, Savannah and George, Jr.

George was employed as a Warehouseman for Wakefern Food Corporation in Elizabeth, New Jersey for 25 years.

He accepted Christ as his Lord and Saviour and was baptized at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where he became a member and was active in the Bridging the Gap ministry serving as a facilitator.

George was an avid bowler. He participated in many leagues and tournaments around the tri-state area spanning two decades, and was very proud to have bowled a “Perfect Game”. He was also a big fan of the New York Giants and New York Knicks.

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, George “Bop” Newsome, went from labor to reward at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey at the age of sixty five.

He was predeceased by his father, J. D. Best and his maternal grandparents, Cleveland and Alice Newsome.

George Kenneth Newsome leaves to cherish fond memories, four daughters, Nichelle Nichol Hairston (Aaron) of Perth Amboy, NJ and Jessica, Marnetta and Savannah Armstrong all of Elizabeth, NJ; two sons, Patrick Armstrong (Joana) of San Diego, CA and George Kenneth Newsome, Jr. of Elizabeth, NJ; his mother, Margaret Newsome Barwick of Wilson, NC; four grandchildren, Aidan, Addison, Michael and Khaseem Jr.; two aunts, Annie Doris McIntyre (Henry) of Sanford, NC and Nancy Jefferson (Charles) of Fayetteville, NC and a host of other relatives and friends.

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
