Obituary for Ernest Cornelius "Buck" Vaughan

Ernest Cornelius Vaughan, the oldest of five children, was born on November 4, 1921 in Brandywine, Virginia, son of the late Walter and Elizabeth Vaughan. "Buck," as he was affectionately nicknamed by his father, grew up and was educated in public schools in Port Royal, Virginia. He spent his childhood years shadowing his father on their farm. At nineteen, Buck moved to Newark, New Jersey where he lived with Uncle Asbury and Aunt Ada and their daughter, Sarah. Shortly after, he answered the call of duty and served his country during World War II under General George S. Patton. Buck never failed to speak of God’s divine protection while in harm’s way during combat.

Upon his return from military service, he married Edna Mayer and they bought a home in Roselle where they settled for over 60 years. There, he became an active member of Second Baptist Church.

Buck was a member of Local Union 715 of Elizabeth where he worked as a Master Carpenter. He was also a licensed Barber and worked alongside his ‘double’ and close friend Tom Sumner at the Hollywood Tonsorial in Linden. Known as a hard worker, he juggled three jobs many times while raising his family yet never seemed to miss a school play, recital or game. He may have popped in late or left early, but we always knew “Daddy” would be there.

To those who were mere acquaintances, Ernest was a somewhat quiet, unassuming man. Those who knew him intimately, they knew of his great story telling of life and military experiences – many times he was the joker! He always testified of how the Lord had blessed him throughout his life and the many times his life was spared. His passions were faith, family, fashion and music!

In 2003, Buck and Edna relocated to Plainfield with their daughter and her family and while there, he covenanted with Abundant Life Family Worship Church. He was welcomed and honored by all who knew him. Many may not know that he even took on a spiritual granddaughter, Tia and was so tickled by that.

On August 5, 2018, after having visited and talked with those who loved him so, our dad quietly departed this life.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Edna Vaughan; twin baby girls; sister, Lucille and great-grandson, Gregory.

Ernest C. Vaughan leaves to mourn his departure, his eight children: Min. Rosetta Mason (Kelvin), Marcia Matthews, Sharon McDonald (Bashir), Wanda Towler, Overseer Ernest Vaughan (Shelly), Gerald Vaughan, Lisa Vaughan and Carla Johnson; two sisters: Mary Mayer and Pauline Adams; brother, James Vaughan (Rose); 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; cousin, George G. Woody, Jr. (Beulah); and a host of dear relatives and friends.
