Obituary for Councilman Ronald Eugene Hayman, Jr.

Councilman Ronald Eugene Hayman, Jr. was born on February 18, 1961, in Elizabeth, NJ, son of the late Ronald Eugene Hayman, Sr. and the late Gwendolyn Winston Hayman. He was known fondly as Rahn, Ronald, little Ronnie, Uncle Rahn, Tio, and Pop Pop to his family and friends. Ronald graduated from Abraham Clark High School in 1979. He then attended Howard University in Washington, DC. Later he attended Kean University in Union, NJ.

He formed a positive connection with everyone, beginning with the smallest child, and ending with the most mature adult. He put everyone at ease, regardless of the person’s background, lifestyle, or season in life. He practiced random acts of kindness.

He loved the field of entertainment. He could be heard broadcasting his radio program, the Indie Highway, on station 97.1. He worked passionately for many years as an event organizer and promoter.

Ronald was employed as Head Chef at the Sphinx Banquet and Catering Center in Roselle for 15 years. He held several other positions throughout the years with different organizations in the catering industry. He served as Councilman of the Second Ward of the Borough of Roselle. He had been employed by the Roselle Board of Education as well. At the time of his passing, he also was employed by Home Depot.

Ronald was a lifelong member of and contributor to Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. In his youth, he was a member of its Inspirational Choir. As an adult, he served on the Ushers’ Ministry, and assisted the Culinary Ministry.

He married Roberta (Kimberly) James in 2012. They formed a blended family. They were blessed to see the family grow in love and expand with a new generation.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ronald Hayman Sr., and Gwendolyn Hayman of Roselle, NJ; brother in law Christopher James of Newark, NJ; several aunts and uncles, including aunt Shirley Crinshaw of Roselle, NJ, aunts Bernice Hayman and Bobby Anne Haley of Newark, DE, uncle Ray Hayman of Chicago, IL, uncle William Winston of Oxen Hill, MD, and uncle Garland Winston of Yancy Mills, VA.

Ronald departed this life on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at his home in Roselle, NJ. We are thankful that we had the opportunity to share a part of his life’s journey with him. Of course that included the many wonderful meals that he prepared for us with love and a heartwarming smile.
He leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories his wife Roberta (Kim) Hayman, mother in law Diane James; son Dega Cobb of Plainfield, NJ, daughter Zajhnengt (GG) Gillison of Richmond, VA; stepchildren Katoyah James (AB) of Newark, NJ, Kason Taylor (Asia) of Maplewood, NJ, and Jeffrey Taylor (Angelica) of Jersey City, NJ; sister and brother in law Jeanette Hayman Higgins and Irving Higgins of Columbia, MD; sister Ronetta Matthews and brother Vincent Eugene King of Newark, DE; sister in law Arnisa James; aunt Eudora Winston and uncle Jerry Crinshaw of Roselle, NJ; special friend Deacon George Byrd of Plainfield, NJ; niece Reynesha Lindsay (Jason) of Chicago, IL; niece and goddaughter Serene Baker and niece Ana Baker of Waldorf, MD; goddaughter Alani Crutchfield of Rahway, NJ, and goddaughter Sarae Fish of Roselle; 12 grandchildren, including Kaniyah (baby girl) James; and a host of cousins, including Karen Baker of Waldorf, MD, Crystal Hayman Simms (James) of Newark, DE, Krista Saunders (Devon), Denise Hayman, Michelle Hayman, Barbara Anne Hayman, Conway Hayman, Gary Hayman (Barbara), William Haley, Jr. (Pamela), Vivian McMillan, Victoria Dickenson, Daryl Congo, Carol Hayman, Anita Hayman, Lisa Hayman, and Pete Hayman.
